Recent Study Suggests Trivalent Inactivated Vaccine (TIV) is More Effective Than Intranasal Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV) Among US Military Personnel

A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) supports previous research suggesting trivalent inactivated vaccine (TIV) is more effective in reducing culture-confirmed influenza infection compared with intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV).

Researchers gathered data on cohorts of more than 1 million military service members 17-49 years of age stationed in the United States during the 2004-2005, 2005-2006, or 2006-2007 influenza seasons.

The study concluded that, based on the immunization rates in this population, TIV may be more effective than LAIV for the prevention of pneumonia and influenza-related morbidity.
