Votes on Influenza Vaccination Recommendations for Next Year

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently voted to recommend the following groups receive annual influenza vaccination during the 2009-2010 season:

  • Anyone who wants to prevent influenza
  • Children 6 months–18 years of age
  • People 50 years of age and older
  • Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season
  • Adults and children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, weakened immune system, diabetes, and others
  • Residents of long-term care facilities and nursing homes
  • Health-care personnel
  • Household contacts and caregivers for people at risk of developing serious complications

The ACIP's expanded pediatric influenza vaccination recommendations including all children 6 months–18 years of age formally goes into effect for the 2009-2010 influenza season.
